Plastic Welder

Welding it started back in the middle ages with many artifacts being found ‘welded.’ Some were small boxes welded with what is called lap joints. No one knows for sure why these were used, maybe because that is all they knew. The Egyptians made many of their tools by welding pieces of iron together. Many different modifications were made through the years and now welding is much better and there are different ways to weld.

When one thinks of welding they think of iron being melted to iron, or metal to metal. There is one type of welding that uses neither.  Plastic welding is not well known but then again it is. Fabricators need to join together seams on plastic items. Not all plastics will take well to adhesives. To make a good solid weld on plastic one will need a good plastic welder.

A person that wants to use a plastic welder to fix something or to make something from scratch must learn the application that will be necessary to do the job correctly. Some plastic welder kits will not be right for certain kinds of plastic materials. That is the problem, finding out which one will be best for the plastic to be welded. If you know the kind of assembly, the working area that is needed and the material; picking out a plastic welder could be a lot easier.

When using a plastic welder there is certain safety rules that must be abided by to insuring a good weld. Be sure the shop where you will be using the plastic welder is clean and no debris is around the work area. If a spec of dirt gets between the item being welded and the plastic welder, it might not hold well and snap on you.

A good stand for the plastic welder is advisable because the tip does get hot. If it is laid down on a surface of any kind it will burn that surface and could start a fire. Be sure also to keep the cords out of the way, as they can tangle and cause a mess.

Be sure to design the workshop and the area that the plastic welder will be so that it is comfortable for the worker or you. If this will be used in a business, keep the employees safe. The temperature and humidity in the shop will affect the plastic welder and the item being welded.

Whether it is your shop or a large business shop, safety is upmost important. Always wear safety goggles, and even ear plugs are handy as well. Tight fitting clothes, work gloves, steel toed shoes or boots are good to wear as well. If visitors come and see the welders working with a plastic welder, be sure to have safety.

Also help keep the environment clean. Using a plastic welder gives off fumes because of the plastics have hazardous fumes and they can flame up and cause a fire. Be sure to have a good solid plan in case of a fire or for the spills as well. Accidents do happen.
